Wilmington Public Schools to Restrict Public Access to School Grounds During School Hours Beginning in 2025–2026 School Year

Wilmington Public Schools (WPS) is implementing a new safety protocol that will restrict public access to school grounds during school hours, effective at the start of the 2025–2026 academic year. This measure, supported by the Wilmington School Committee, Town Manager, and Chief of Police, is part of a district-wide effort to strengthen student safety and enhance the learning environment.

Currently, WPS campuses, including fields, playgrounds, and surrounding school grounds, remain open to the public throughout the school day. This open access has raised several concerns, including unmonitored visitors, interruptions to instructional activities, and safety risks such as the presence of pets during school hours.

Key Details of the New Protocol:

  • Restricted Hours: All WPS school campuses will be closed to the public from approximately 30 minutes before the start of the school day until approximately 30 minutes after dismissal on days when school is in session.
  • Scope: The restriction applies to all school grounds, including athletic fields, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces adjacent to school buildings.
  • Implementation Date: The procedure will go into effect at the beginning of the 2025–2026 school year.

“This change is a proactive step toward maintaining safe, respectful, and inclusive environments for all our students and staff,” said the Wilmington Public Schools Central Administration in a message to families and community members. “By limiting public access during the school day, we aim to minimize disruptions, reduce supervision challenges, and ensure our campuses are used primarily for educational purposes during learning hours.”

To support the transition, clear signage will be posted at all school locations outlining the restricted access times. The district is also coordinating with town leadership to ensure that the broader community is fully informed of the new protocol and its importance.

Wilmington Public Schools appreciates the continued support of families and community partners as it works to maintain secure and focused school environments.
