Hello West Parents,
With the onset of winter, and the variations in weather it brings, I would like to take a moment to remind you all about how we approach outdoor recess. We use the Child Care Weather Watch Chart (http://www.c-uphd.org/documents/wellness/weatherwatch.pdf) to determine whether we will go out or stay in. Mrs. Hannigan, our school nurse, and I, check the outside temperature and wind using a weather app, then together we check the chart and make a decision. When we do go out, our challenge has always been trying to determine if children are dressed appropriately for the weather, while at the same time respecting your decision as a parent regarding what your child wears to school. Adding to the situation, many garments now are of technologically advanced materials that in fact are much warmer than they look. Therefore, from this point forward, we will make the assumption that the outer garments a child wears to school are also approved by you for outdoor recess. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact me. Thanks.
Students regularly take their math assessments (pre- and/ or post-topic) online. They have visited the computer lab or have taken the tests right in class on the Chromebooks. This adjustment to an online format will be helpful in preparation for our Spring MCAS testing, especially for students in Grade 4 who will be completing their MCAS in ELA and Mathematics on a computer-based format. Please note that the testing window is longer this spring in order for us to coordinate the use of our testing devices. The MCAS 2019 testing window is April 1st through May 2th. A more detailed calendar for specific grades will be sent home in January.
